As students grow up, they need to learn more. Metaphorically speaking, let’s take the bowl and water to describe the relationship between knowledge and students.

The bowl symbolises the child’s capacity to learn. It also represents the child’s motivation, ability to concentrate and attitude towards learning. A bowl’s size needs to correspond to the volume of knowledge that will fill it. The role of home education is to mould the bowl, and the role of the Kumon Method is to expand the size of that bowl accordingly.

The water symbolises material or content. The role of the school is to “pour water” or knowledge “into the child.” The aim of the average teaching method is to “fit a certain amount of water”, or content, “into the child” without first trying to ascertain the size of the bowl, that is to say, the child’s capacity to learn.
